Of Rape, Sex and Porn

India- the land of Kamasutra. The culture that intrinsically treats sex and sexuality as a part of the human nature, as an art, as a way of life. Then why, suddenly, are people of this soil getting aggressive and hateful towards it? As pagans, Indians treat the womans vagina, and the pleasure it gives as a route to heaven. So why then, is it being mutilated and abused?

People with vested interests in dividing people on religious grounds claim different religions to be the reason for it. However, we must not forget, that the sudden surge in sexual crimes, which are horrendous in nature, are recent as compared to the advent of different cultures.

I admit, the basic act of rape has been around for longer than we care to admit. But off late, rapes have become more and more inhumane. As if rapes were humane to begin with, people are finding more and more brutal ways to do it.

Why? If anyone reads the sexpert columns in the papers the questions can lead to the answer to our question. While some questions are dumb and some are funny, many of them reflect the very origin of these concepts.

PORN... a million dollar, vested interested and influential industry. Today, porn is so freely available, that even children who haven't reached adolescence have access to it and interest in it.

However, porn doesn't really portray sex and sexuality in the realistic light. Like any other cinema, porn portrays a slightly vague and untrue reality. It brings to light certain concepts that we would not imbibe in reality. If you look closely, it is part of the charm.

With porn videos showing men forcing women, and women eventually enjoying it, or men indulging in sex with older women, or women saying-no-and-meaning-yes, the understanding of sexual consensuality has gotten warped. When they see that it is not going they way porn depicts, it tends to anger them and causes them to get aggressive and, at times, criminal! Sexually deprived men tend to see every woman as a potential sex partner. The warped male dominant Indian mentality brings to their attention that if-they-want-it-they-can-take-it. And forcing, brings them a more animalistic pleasure.

I don't blame porn completely. It is a work of art for those who create it. Many watch it and take for what it is, temporary freedom from reality for pleasure. But some get so influenced by it that they forget reality.

What I blame is the wide gap between sexual acceptability and desire visa vis the depictions in porn.

If a civilization want sex crimes to reduce, it has to first allow sex to be an openly discussed topic. Once we reach that milestone, even if children and young adults watch pornography, they will discuss it with elders. Even if they don't, the fact that it "isn't a big deal" will keep them from going overboard with it. They will not reach points of frustration that make them aggressive towards the act. Lastly, proactive measures like sex-ed should start at a young age. Even though adolescence starts at 13, mental preparedness should start at 10.

Sex is not a bad thing. It is natural. Porn is just a creative depiction of sexuality. But when even animals believe in consent before mating, so why can't we humans?
