HIV/AIDS - 101 For Dummies

There is a lot of talk about HIV/AIDS, and for good reason. Awareness is the key to reducing the growth and further damage done by the Virus. Nonetheless, not all things spoken about it are true.

Did you know that 75% of the people infected with HIV go colour-blind? No, because it isn’t a fact! Sorry about pulling that one on you, but let’s see some more (less ridiculous) myths surrounding the subject!

HIV/AIDS | Bonafide Urban Chick
HIV is the same as AIDS

No, HIV or Human Immune-deficiency Virus is the virus that infects the person who comes in contact with it. Whereas, AIDS or Acute Immuno Deficiency Syndrome is its long term effect. Not everyone who is HIV positive will go on to be an AIDS patient. Thanks to modern medicines, the mutation and impact of the virus can be curbed to a great extent.

Men are more prone to AIDS

This was a considered a valid point for some period of time due to the fact that men, more openly, used to indulge in casual sexcapades. Nonetheless, with women being equally sexually liberated, now women have a higher susceptibility to contracting the virus. This is mostly because the woman’s sexual organ is more open to any infection entering the body, as compared to men.

AIDS is a Homosexual-Centric Disease

On the contrary, HIV and AIDS has been detected more in heterosexuals. Nonetheless, HIV does not discriminate between sexual orientation. If you are having casual sex with multiple partners, you have a chance to contract the disease.

HIV can be cured

NO! Despite the in-depth medical research, there is still no cure for HIV. Nonetheless, the good people researching have found drugs that help keep the mutation of the virus to the bare minimum which allow the patient to lead a normal and fulfilling life. There is a chance that the occurrence of AIDS is then kept to the very later stages of life.

HIV Symptoms show up immediately

There is no certainty as to when the signs of HIV will surface. The time can range up to 10 years before the symptoms show on the patients. Hence, it is essential that if one is indulging in sex with multiple partners one must get themselves tested for HIV at regular intervals and also discuss it with new partners before “jumping into bed” with them.

If both partners have HIV, one doesn’t need to have safe sex

While it seems like a very logical statement, it is important to know that the HIV is a mutating virus and one can get repeatedly infected with different strains that mutate in the system further. So, yes, even if you and your partner both have HIV, it is essential to use a latex barrier.

There is a Vaccination to avoid getting HIV

Gosh NO! Despite repeated efforts, medical scientists have still not succeeded in formulating a vaccination to avoid HIV. The most certain way to keep HIV at bay would be to not have sex. But that doesn’t seem like the most practical option, right? So then it is advisable to use barriers during sex and communicate with your partner before you indulge in the act.

Condoms can avoid HIV completely

Just like pregnancy, condoms are effective at avoiding the contraction of HIV only about 80% of the times. Yes, this is not a very pleasing figure. Hence it is essential that whether you are using a barrier or not, you discuss HIV with your partner before indulging in sexual activity with them.

I won’t get HIV with Oral Sex

Chances are slim, but still present. Because HIV can be transmitted through blood and bodily fluids, if one indulges in oral sex with an HIV patient, one does have a chance of contracting the disease if they have any gum bleeding, open wounds or ulcers in their mouth. Hence, when indulging in Oral sex with and HIV patient, always use a barrier.

HIV/AIDS is something that we all need to collectively know more about. While the biggest hurdle is that fact that we have still been unable to find a cure, knowing that there are drugs that can help those who are already infected is a breath of fresh air.

Are You Right in Drinking Energy Drinks?

Energy Drink | Bonafide Urban Chick
How often do you find yourself reaching out for an energy drink because “it is better than having a normal aerated cold-drink”? For some reason it just seems to make more sense to pick up something that boosts your energy as well as satiate your need for a cold-drink, right?
Energy drinks are dime a dozen and available at practically every general story. From being used in mocktails to hookahs they have seeped into our lifestyle quite comfortably. But is that a good thing? Just like tea and coffee, which boost us, energy drinks have their fair share of side effects as well.

Lack of Sleep: Most energy drinks contain caffeine which is a prime cause of insomnia. People are addicted to caffeine have a tendency to sleep less than 3 hours a day, which may help them get more done in the short run but cause them anxiety, chronic headaches and irritability in the long run? Lack of sleep has major implications on the basic functioning and wear-and-tear of the body and is the worst thing you could put your body through.

Excessive Nutrients: Most of us will say “What’s wrong with excessive nutrition?” Well, a lot. While it is absolutely great if this nutrition is derived from natural sources like fruits and vegetables, getting it from an artificial source will lead to your body to put in more effort into breaking it down and cause the release of more toxins. We all know that that is not the best thing in the world.

Sugar Sugar Sugar: Thanks to modern day research, it is amply known that excessive sugar in the system is going to do you no good. While it plays a major role in weight gain, excessive sugar also causes behavioural problems like impatience, lower tolerance, anger issues and insomnia.

Ginkgo Biloba: Most energy drinks contain Ginkgo Biloba, which when combined with Ginseng (which also most energy drinks contain) can cause heart trouble and chronic headaches. It’s like saying, the energy drink is really going to give you a headache!

Dehydration: Yes, you have the energy drink to quench your thirst, but the combination of the many ingredients in the drink are the cause of dehydration. Which in turn will make you have more and more the drink and amplify the many other side effects they cause. You see the drift here?

Addiction: Energy drinks are addictive. So, if you are planning on replacing your drink with an energy drink at the bar or mixing it with your vodka, it’s strongly suggested to you to re-think your options. Energy drinks contain amino acids, which in excess from an artificial source will cause you to feel light-headed for a bit. The feeling is great and you will find yourself reaching out for the next can in no time. When mixed with alcohol which is a depressant, the energy drink which is a stimulant, prove to have several adverse effects on your body. The most common of the lot is sudden pain in the chest and chronic heart problems.

Listen, you could disagree, and I completely support your right to do so! But this post is not to negate energy drinks, but to understand that their consumption needs to be in moderation!

5 Reasons Why I'd Want My Girls Watching Miss Congeniality

Released in 2000, Miss Congeniality and Miss Congeniality 2 in 2005, were quite the hit in India as well. Starring Sandra Bullock, the Miss Congeniality series was about an FBI agent having to be gorgeous and beautiful. While, prima facie, this movie seems to be something that conforms to the stereotypes enforced on women by society. In reality, it is far from it. Which is why I'd want my daughter or niece or little sister watching these two movies.

Being Tough is Cool | Bonafide Urban Chick
1. Being Tough is Cool: Be what you are, if you are a girlie girl, then good, but if you are a toughie, then be proud of it. Because who you are will be who you are. Nonetheless, there is a little bit of ass kicking that every girl should manage! Learn some self-defense, so that you don't need a knight in shining armour. Because, girl, it is time the princess learns to save herself! Which brings us to the next point!

Looks are Important But Not Essential | Bonafide Urban Chick
2. Looks are Important But Not Essential: A little bit of expert work, and effort can make anyone look attractive. But what defines you is what dwells in your mind and heart. You're skills, your abilities and what you do for society is what defines you!

Girl Time is Important | Bonafide Urban Chick
3. Girl Time is Important: While it is important to work hard, focus on your studies and focus on your career, some pizza and dancing with your girls is something that helps open your heart and mind. It liberates you, makes you realize (if  you have forgotten) that you truly are amazing and a "total queen"!

Food is Good | Bonafide Urban Chick
4. Food is Good: Yes, being thin and having a sexy figure is important. I mean, we would all want to fit in the model size clothes, right? But, food is good girls! Eat well, eat right and eat what you love! And if you love the butters, creams and cakes, then also add exercise to your regimen! Simple!

Sometimes the Best Partner in Life is a Friend | Bonafide Urban Chick
5. Sometimes the Best Partner in Life is a Friend: Love is overrated darling. Yes, it is lovely to have someone to love you, pamper you and care for you. But who the heck said that it has to be a man? If you get a man to do this without compromising on your identity, then great. Otherwise that amazing friend who is always there for you, is a good partner too! Love is love because it simple is... love doesn't demand change!

Look sweetheart... you are amazing, and Grace Hart is like you, in some way or another. Love yourself, be yourself and have the guts to stand up for yourself! Through all that, I am with you!

Facebook and Perception | A Socio-Communal Experiment

For long am I an observer and student of an individual's behavior on communal matters on social media platforms. The opportunity to gather some concrete findings presented it self when Eid-Ul-Adha and Karwa Chauth came by withing a short span of time.

Procedure #1:
For Eid-Ul-Adha, I made a communally offensive post, in a discrete manner that got a few likes and one comment.

Findings:
On analyzing the demographics of the post, it became clear that the people agreeing with me were those who hold either a different communal faith, or a similar mindset. however, There were many who agreed, but refused to be vocal at the cost of seeming extremist. Simply because any Muslim who holds up his faith these days gets tainted as an extreme fascist.

More so, it is acceptable for one to go about "offending" "his own" faith if he wants. because everyone likes to read some one bitch about the beliefs they follow.

Procedure #2:
For Karwa Chauth, I made a joke about a sexual act having a better impact that the Karwa Chauth Fast. This post had hate comments pouring in like crazy.

Findings:
On analyzing the demograhics here, I found that people who absolutely disagreed refrained from commenting. The sent me a personal message telling me how insensitive, disgusting and disrespectful my thinking about such a divine custom is. Some who found the post funny, liked it. Some came out and admitted to their dislike for the post.

This time, the difference was that I was "attacking some one else's faith" and so all the gloves came off. Most of them came with the angle that we should not disrespect anyone else's faith, and some simply blamed me for not being able to "see" the sanctity of the custom.

The simple reason for wanting to conduct this study was to get to the know the innate nature of the "broad-minded" individuals in our vicinity. Those who could handle the joke for what it was, responded accordingly and let it go. They did not let this become a matter of war.

I had also posted another post one day before Karwa Chauth showing my affinity for the custom. This post saw only mediocre engagement as I was depicting positive attitude, just like most others.

Despite there being some common commentors and likers, the fact that the "joke" didn't mean to offend was not taken into consideration. In fact, there is actually a blatant show of unlikeliness to participate in the custom here .

The Reason for the Study:
I am sure many must be wondering why I would do such a study. The answer is simple, to unfold the closeted carvings of an individuals mind. The reason for putting up the findings is to let us know that people may not be against you, but there are darker crevices to the persona that gets impacted with the lightest ripple.

Conclusion:
"He who gets disrespected will be disrespected." So we need to stop taking offense and keep a sense of humor about all things that are out of our control, or of some one else's perception.

Opinions and Assholes

We have all heard the quote "Opinions are like assholes, everyone has one". But what when the one having the opinion is an asshole? It kind of turns into a meta-quote of sorts, doesn't it.

I am very active on twitter, and fairly opinionated too. For a long time, opinions on twitter were considered, even if not agreed to. If someone really disagreed with something, they'd simply ignore it. However, like every luxury, social media also started getting abused.

The sad part is that educated internet users tend to get so racist and communal with their updates. Not only do they make updates that are communal or derogatory to a belief, they seek people out and make it their mission to troll and stalk them communally or on the basis of a difference in opinion. They don't stop at just that, they get personal!

Just today I blocked another such educated illiterate. I am not asking for people to adopt each others faiths, but atleast have the common decency and humanity to respect it. And if you can't, then ignore that person. What is the sense in trying to pin them to the ground? People try to prove their superiority by trolling. They forget that superiors don't troll, they take what they like, leave the rest and move on!

Communication is the backbone of world dynamics. With the way we humans communicate our opinions, I fear a silent era in the offate. Where people rather shut up than say anything, lest they have a disagreement.

Evolution taught us how to speak. Gave us intelligence to understand. It is ok if we have different perceptions, that's what helps us grow. Similarity would only lead to stagnancy!

Now I also know that there will be assholes with opinions about this blog. Go ahead guys, opinionate away!

God is a Placebo?

Before I begin, I would like to state that I am not an atheist. However, I am not religious either, I am simply spiritual. I believe in God, but not in the many names the people give God.

Over the years, I have come to reallise and observe that even the most religious people have a sever lack of faith. Be it the concept of "buri nazar" or bad luck, they fall prey to believing in it in no time. More so, they forget to keep faith. They simply keep following religious culture and practices.

Whether God exists or not is quite a debate. However, for the purpose of simplifying life, God (as a concept) works very well. As a placebo, God is perfect.

Even athiests would agree that placebos work. That is, if your believe that something is working for you, it will work for you. Why then not use the more powerful placebo to your advantage?

Keeping faith and belief in God can work splendidly. If you work hard, having faith that your hard work willl be rewarded, because God is looking, will give you strength to hold on through the gestation period. If you feel that life is tough, believing that God is testing your strength to stay on the right path, will keep you away from doing the wrong things to get short term relief.

God, to believers, always existed. But people had to be reminded of its existence, to bring them to the path of living a sustainable, more human-friendly life. Rules by mesiahs were more life guidelines to help people follow a path in life that would give them long term happiness. One that would allow them to get heaven on earth itself.

The reason for this post, is to let all my ardently religious readers to see the difference between having faith and simply being religious. Being religious will bring the fear or God in you. But having faith, will bring the peace of God in your life. Know the difference!

Self Communication- An Intelligent Solution

Gone are the days when talking to yourself was considered as being a sign of being mentally deranged. Self communication is actually considered to be a sign of genius now.

Talking to yourself can help you in a major way:

One of my life coaching clients had a very common problem of not being able to voice out his problems. Being the youngest in  a very strong headed family, the habit of "keeping everything in" caused his much discomfort as well as health problems.

While talking to me, his life coach, did help him, it is not exactly the same as saying it then and there. In order to make his start voicing out his issues, and enouraged him to first have an imagined conversation with himself. In this conversation, he would say exactly what he wants to. He would imagine the listeners reaction and (because it is all in his mind) stand up to it.

Slowly, he got more and more comfortable with this pattern. I then asked him to have the conversation with himself out loud, when alone. Hearing his own voice, when standing up for himself was something that took him time to get comfortable with. He had discussions with his father, brothers, mother and even some acquaintances. All with himself. He was now desensitized (to some extent) to the concept of speaking up.

The next step was the toughest. I asked him to politely speak up the next time he feels wronged. The whole time telling himself that "whats the most they can do? Say no? I still need to voice myself". When he did it the first time, he stammered and perspired. His father was taken aback at his son's "audacity". But to my client's delight, his father heard him out and agreed.

Slowly his confidence increased. His communication improved. He was still the considerate, pleasant man as before. Only now, he had a voice of his own too. This helped him with his personal relations as well as his profession!

See, talking to yourself can help "take it out" many a times. Try it out. Even if you are already confident and vocal, you may need to often try out a conversation before you really have it. Self communication is helpful for that too.

If you need more help, contact me!

Do We Celebrate Depression

A recent observation about hindi cinema made me realize that there is a certain level of celebration of depression in it. From old hindi movies to the current cinema, a level of depression and sadism is celebrated in cinema.
The patent hindi cinema recipe used to be "hero meets herione. After a series of serendipitious events, they fall hin love. Madly in love, they see dreams of the future and promise togetherness for eternity. No sooner, the zaalim zamaana and paapi sansaar come to know. The girl is then forced to get married to someone else. The other man, though loving, is not her lover and cannot handle the changes. Both and hero and heroine lead a life of denial and depression."
What was often not noticed by many was that the side characters were mostly happy. They never stressed and had a let-go attitude. They not only had the heart to accept the love of the hero and heroine, they also had it in them to sacrifice their feelings and walk away with a smile.
So who here is the real hero? The one who drank, denied and was depressed, or the one who smiled even with a broken heart?
Maybe we need to stop romanticizing denial and depression. Maybe we need to realize that letting go is a better way of being happy, not holding on.
Mass media affects the mindsets of generations at large. If these movies start having the right perspectives, may be we can grow better as civilation on the whole.
Disclaimer: The opinions in this post are correct. If you don't agree, you are wrong!

Maybe Darwin Really Understood God

A recent conversation about religion and why Darwin's theory differs so much from it, has inspired this post. You see, sometimes the audience to my conversations cannot really follow my logic, and so, in a hope to find some good readers here, I post it up.

Darwin said that we have evolved from apes. That is not all he said, Darwin's theory of Evolution was far more complex and vast, but this is the crux of it, that matters to us humans, and our "where did we come from" question.

Religion (Islam and Christianity in particular, because these two faiths are in majority the world over) states that God created the Earth, the sun, the moon, the plants, the birds, the animals, and lastly, Adam and Eve. It was when Adam and Eve broke the rule of the Garden of Eden, were they sent down to earth, as a punishment. It was also to propound the word of God.

Now, Darwinism and Religion don't really agree, do they. While Darwin says that humans are a result of evolution due to circumstances, religion states, that it was God who created humans, gave them the power to talk and think, and made them the medium for His word.

Both points are valid for those who chose to believe in them. Certain people who are more faith-inclined will say that it makes sense that everything was done by God. Those who believe and see evolution through findings, science, etc would say that Darwin was spot on.

But why do the two really have to be at logger heads. May be, the propounder of the faiths made the point, but no one got it, and now people are just blindly sticking to a line that they drew as per their narrow-minded understanding.

Here is how we can put both the beliefs in a single statement.

Darwinists believe that we (humans) have evolved from other, simple animals. This happened over millions of years due to change in environment, increase in intelligence and of course, that fact that the universe never stays constant. Believers believe that God created Humans on the 6th day, after he created all the other elements.

What is to say that while the sayings go that on each day God created one, the definition of "day" need not necessarily be the typical 24hours. what if "day" really means millions of years? What if the reason why each was created after the other could have something to do with the fact that each resulted in the need and creation of the other? Makes sense to you? You see, because He is God, he need not have gone in the order. He could have simply created it all together, BAM... all done. But no! He went in the order, and first created animals, which I am sure included apes, and then came Humans.

Then slowly, comes the ability in them to think, to question rules and to be self-willing. that is when believers say Adam and Eve were banished from the Garden of Eden. But think about it, it is our ability to think that has pretty much destroyed nature. The earth of once the Garden of Eden, and we have ourselves, banished ourselves from it, by changing it so drastically.

So you see, it is not necessary that it needs to be either Darwin or God. Maybe, Darwin simply saw method in what God did, while others closed their minds and went literally about things. May be it doesn't have to be either or, may be it is really both.

We need to know that following a faith should be informed, educated and questioned. That is when it is good for the individual and the society. Fixed following only leads to dogma, not a progressive society.

Double Standard- A Naked Truth

I saw a video in YouTube about a 17 years old girl in Guwahati, being molested on a road, and stripped in public by 20 so-called "men". Just 5 minutes later I saw a picture on my Facebook timeline of a chick posing naked, for PlayBoy. She just shared the pic on facebook "to let us all know".

While I completely support the idea of nudity at will, I refuse to succumb to subservience to a society that says that if a woman's appearance inspires a man's erection, he can simply do as he pleases. I am sorry, being a woman, not only do I support a woman's right to dress and behave as will, as long as she isn't harming anyone, I also support a man's behaviour to do the same.

However, what I know for a fact, that today's Guwahati incident is going to cause a big huge hooplah about pubs, skirts, lage nights and women drinking alcohol. Pubs will be bad mouthed, the poor 17 year old is going to be persecuted for "dressing provocatively", drinking and being out at night. Parents will stop daughters from going out, and the goons who were not even man enough to respect a woman will roam free.

Yes, the double standard lives! Men can roam around however they want, while women have to cover themselves up EVEN IF THEY DON'T WANT TO! Despite that, women will always be prey to the perverted mind of sick men!

Why such a double standard? Why does a rape mean that the woman was not careful enough, rather than the guy being wrong? Why should women be careful, rather than men being more well-behaved?

Sexuality is human. Men and women both have sexual needs, arousals, desires and a need for sexual satisfaction! Nontheless, sex is rape if not consensual! Men, women are not for you to molest at will! Women, you have the right to say no, and take action against those who force nonetheless!

Our society needs to learn healthy, moral, ethical and human ways to achieve sexual stimulation, satisfaction and understanding. It is truly a warped world!

Was Raavan the Real Hero?

[Disclaimer: This post is my personal opinion and the figment of a questioning mind. It is not intended to hurt anyone's beliefs, sensibilities or faith. If you disagree, you can put it in the comments section, I really don't mind!]

Every Indian, be it a hindu or a non-hindu, knows the story of Ramayan. We all know who wrote it. And we all know how it unfolded.

However, we are so caught up in peer perception that we fail to look at things differently. We have been TAUGHT that Raavan was the bad guy, Sita was the damsel in distress, Ram was the hero and Hanuman was the saviour! What if, we change the perception a tad bit.

Everyone knows that Raavan was a highly educated, maha-buddhishaali, gyaani who had done years of tapasya. He was a great king and managed 10 things at a time. That could be why he was said to have ten heads, maybe? Now, Ram was a good son who, on the insistance of his step mother, went for van-vaas. Now, thats all fine. It shows his strength of character to take challenges with a smile.

Sita, a princess by birth, agreed to follow her husband into van-vaas. That is good too, after all, if a couple cannot face challenges together, what can they do?

Raavan, a king of a kingdom (with apparently hideous women) saw Sita and was besotted. Why wouldn't he be? She was a princess and known to be gorgeous. Raavan was a young, powerful king, I am sure he had his testosterone raging too! He fell in love with Sita, and like 90% guys, made a small mistake in getting her.

Since she was already married, asking her out or talking to her was out of the question. And being a hot blooded, love-struck king, he made the mistake of kidnapping her. He took her to his kingdom in the hopes that she would get to know him, and eventually fall in love with him

Ram sent Hanuman, a celeb-struck blind follower to get Sita back. Hanuman followed the orders, which is understandable, after all Sita WAS RAM'S WIFE! But why would Ram need help? If Ram was the hero, his sheer goodness would have been enough to defeat the big bad king of Lanka!

Anyways, Hanuman went down there, burnt the Golden city of Lanka and brought back his idol's lady. The whole time, Raavan, the gentleman that he was, did not force his affections on Sita at all. He tried resoning, and treated her with utmost care and respect. Now, which VILLIAN does that?

So Hanuman brought our damsel in distress back. When Sita saw her man all she wanted was to see love, and all she got was doubt. Ram did not trust his wife! When she said that she was untouched, he did not believe her! After all, Raavan was believed to be the villian, if he would have done something, telling everyone would only have made his image worse. What would have been the harm in that?

So Ram didn't trust Sita, and sent her off the kingdom while she was pregnant with HIS TWINS! You call that a hero?? While Raavan treated the woman he loved with respect, despite the fact that she was his prisoner and that he could have done anything with her. How does that make him the villian?

All I aim to say here is that there are always two sides to a coin. Ram regretted his decision of sending Sita off, and Raavan died as a man madly in love. Ram's sons grew up hating him, while Sita had to go through an agneepariksha to prove her chastity! Things are often portrayed a little differently than what they are. Or maybe, it is just a matter of perception! Published with Blogger-droid v1.6.8

A Depressed State of Gujarat

{Disclaimer: This post is based on pure observation over the past year, regular interaction with several people affected and does not intend to offend or hurt anyone or anyone's sensibilities.}

A few days back, a converstaion with my extended family got my brain wheels churning at a crazy RPM!

I don't know how many readers are aware of the fact that a feeling of continued helplessness is one of the major causes of depression. But yes, it is true! In Gujarat there have been repeated riots, cultural and communal division and general widespread peer pressure. Most people go through a feeling of helplessness without being able to actually find a conclusive solution, or even really being aware of its repercussions.

What really blew my mind, was the fact that the Gujarat Board actually makes the 10th and 12th examinations easy! Yes, the really pressure years for normal people are "no sweat" here! Why? There have been observed cases of students submitting their lives to the sabarmati river (suicide) if they fail, or don't get the desired/expected score.

Can you believe it? The government did not bother to counsel students, eradicate peer pressure at the school level, or even take PTA meetings to discuss how the problem can be dealt with. No! They simply made the exams easy! The way when Hindus and Muslims had rifts, they simply allotted them separate dedicated areas to live in, so that there was no interaction.

Due to these facts, Gujaratis have developed a tendency to take the easy way out, succumb to peer pressure excessively and above all, not be fighters. They will not challenge the trend, so much so, that if many people are doing something wrong, no one will have the gumption to stand up against it. How is this the Gandhian way? A state that celebrates Gandhi, can barely live up to the one principle he lived by, 'challenging the situation and moving above it'!

This is at an elementary level as well. School students tend to stupidly mug things up, because when they don't understand something (which is most of the times) they are too afraid to stand up an ask questions. They are made to feel stupid by the teachers as well. How do I know this? Several parents discuss their children's low self confidence with me! The cases are almost identical here!

This ends up putting even more pressure on the students leading them to simply hate education. Because the parental generation went through the same, they don't encourage the children either. The lack of education based understanding and ability to think logically with a positive approach, further increases the depressive ways here. They wouldn't even consult a psychologist, they rather just take pills to elevate thier mood, or allow them to sleep. This is not just in case of depression. A person suffering from a viral cold isn't instructed by the doctor to sleep and drink fluids, they are simply prescribed sleeping pills with antibiotics.

There are several exceptions. But here, we dont focus on exceptions, we focus on the rule. And honestly, the rule is blasphemous. How will this place truly develop when the people still live primitively? If the generations cannot stand up, how will the state go higher?

Too many questions, one observer! I hope people notice and, atleast try, to make a change!

Does Gifting Make us Materialistic?

Now, I can safely and proudly say that I am probably the least materialistic person I know. Money doesn't give me joy, clothes and accessories don't define my persona and I do not judge others by these parameters either. Yes, I am one of a kind!

The other day, while I was at my nephew's birthday bash, I saw how important all the gifts were to him. He refused to let anyone else open them, he refused to let his sister touch them, and most importantly, pulled a Dudley (reacted with a tantrum) when he saw that his dad got him something other than what he had demanded.

Let me bring it to your attention that this kid is only 10 years old.

This made me think. Have these customs paved the way for our (I do not include myself in this) materialistic ways? Does the act of compulsorily giving a gift to your child make them materialistic and shallow?

Re-tracking to my childhood days, my parents refused to buy us material gifts on our birthdays. Infact, my father once told me "Why does it have to be given on your birthday? When you will need it, you will have it. Even if it is not your birthday." Even when we asked our parents what gifts they wanted, my mother's favorite demand was "I don't want anything, I just want you to be a good girl, and be the best you can be." Needless to say, I sincerely tried for a few days, and then conveniently forgot about it.

Nonetheless, this act ingrained in us the virtue of gifts being sentimental in nature, and not materialistic. WE also always trusted our parents to give us what we NEEDED, as opposed to what we just WANTED. Parents who chose to gift their children things that "all their friends have" are not only making their children materialistic, but also paving the way for a peer pressured way of life.

Are birthdays and occassions all about gifts? Is BUYING someone something expensive (subjectively used term) the way to show how much they mean to you? Can a cup of lovingly made tea or coffee, a hug and an I love you be enough to show someone just how much you mean to them? Do you judge someones character on the basis of how they gift?

Think back and calculate how much money you wasted buying stupid, but in-demand and expensive gifts, when you could have more lovingly shown your feelings for your loved one. May be, we need a change, yes?

Self-Induced Depression

Depression is probably THE MOST POPULAR psychological condition known these days. Infact, it is one of the best known alibis for lethargy and an absence from sticking to social norms. It is also a well-known "reason" for weight-gain, alcoholism and excessive smoking!

However, the fact remains that in the current social paradign, depression maybe caused initially by circumstances, but maintained further on by oneself. Here, I come to my concept of "Self-Induced Depression":

Yes, sounds harsh! Many may say that "how can you say that? You are saying the I am the reason why I am depressed?" Yes, that is exactly what I am saying!

It is very simple, now that depression is such a well-known, well-read about and much written about condition, shouldn't it be possible for people recognise it, acknoledge it and get over it? Yes, easier said than done! Which is exactly the reason why I say that more often than not, it is maintained by oneself!

How does it work?
Depression is a condition where in an individual is overwhelmed by the situations and circumstances and stops paying attention to their own well-being, gets chronically upset and is in a constant state of anxiety. Now, most of the times, people stay depressed for a while and then slowly start to move on. Along the process, other situations and circumstances distract them out of their depressed state.

Self induced cases of depression are where in an individual keeps thinking about the situation that depresses them. They keep going back to the same conversations, thoughts and discussions that maintain their state of depression! They find it convenient to be depressed, because it is an easy alibi for simply gliding along, rather than taking control.

How can this condition be solved?
People siffering from self-induced depression will mostly reject ideas that will make them happy and get them out of their depressed state.

The only way in which this condition can be solved is by constantly shaking the individual out of the depressive mood. They need to be distracted whenever they regress into thoughts and conversations that bring them back to states of depression! They will need to be made to laugh, joke around, and even openly express their anger to get it out of their system.

While the concept of Self-Induced Depression is still very much in the fetal stage, I aim at researching more about it, and hopefully helping people deal with it!

Science, Evolution and Men

I am back baby, with a new post to really rock your world.

A few days back, I read a tweet that informed me that all feotus are infact female. It is a little later that the Y chromosome kicks in for the male child. This is the primary reason why even men have nipples, despite the fact that they have no need for it at all!

On giving further thought to this simple fact, it is simple. Girls come first. Now, extending this fact to a general state, females are the default gender of the feotus. Hence, it is simple, women came first, then men.

Now, coming to simple spirituality beliefs of the start of the world, it is believed that God first made man, right? However, God and science cannot differ at such a basic level. As the story goes, first Adam was created, then from his rib was Eve created.

These 2 and 2 put together lead to the conclusion that all spiritual books are slightly mistaken. Which is fine, considering that, essentially, they are all human beings and allowed to err.

Here is my theory, bringing a merger between science and spirituality and adding a dash of evolution.
"God First created Eve (the female). Then he added another rib (Y chromosome) and was Adam created." Simply stated, the reason why men are considered to mature after women (proven by psychologists) is because they develop after women. Or rather, start pre-birth development after women!

I know that this fact will be very difficult for people to accept. However, being ahead of my time, I am used to this. Nonetheless, feel free to let people know about this, and disagree with it as well!

Cheers!

The Maggi Model of Quality Time

Okay, this blog post is not inspired by the "Main aur meri Maggi" campaign! It actually came as an epiphany due to a long span of deprivation.

When I was single, I used to have a lot of time by myself. Belonging to a family wherein everybody had a job, and we had a very disciplined lifestyle. Nonetheless, there used to be days and afternoons, atleast twice a month, when I used to get some quality ME time!

Almost every alternate ME day, I used to get myself a pack of Maggi and have it while watching the episodes of some show, or some movie. It was my way of relaxing my mind, and just spending some quality time with myself. However, the relationship between the quality time and the Maggi hadn't occurred to me till a few days back.

It has been over 6 months since my marriage. I only just had an alone afternoon last weekend. It was my first since marriage. Since the past 4 odd months, I have been craving Maggi. Raj made it once, but it did not satiate me the way Maggi should. I always thought of having Maggi, but never got round to doing it.

The other day, when I was alone, I completed the pending chores and made a nice bowl of Maggi, put on an episode of How I Met Your Mother, and had one of the best afternoons of my married life. Aah... the solitude, the Maggi, and the combination of the two was simple bliss.

That is when I realized it. Even in solitude, we all need our accompaniments. For most Indians, that accompaniment is Maggi. It is fast to make, anyone can do it and simple as ever. More so, something about it causes a surge of endorphin release, making it the bringer of joy!

So, from now on, whenever I feel super irate, or miss my single-hood, I will make me some Maggi and lock myself in my room!2 hours of Maggi time, and I will be back to my charming self!

You should try it out too, it works!

The Messiah or The Dictator

I am back! The blog post regularity rate seems to have accelerated. I guess it is a recurring pattern that needs to be studied. But, as of now, we shall not be bothered by it. Why? Because, today, as I was doing my weekly kitchen cleaning another idea struck my mind! If I do not share it, I will lose it. And boy, will that be a great loss!

What am I? Am I a messiah or a dictator? Now, I know most of you may think that I think too much of myself. Well, I do! What you think about it really doesn't matter to me! So, yes, coming back to the question, am I a messiah or a dictator? I have a tendency to always think differently from others. My thoughts are mostly either considered outrageous, far-fetched or point-blank stupid. Also, I have seemed to have caused crazy upheavals in people's lives.

This question is asked keeping a particular example set in mind. Jesus and Hitler. Why have I selected these two? Well, let's see:

  • Firstly: Both of them came at a time when people were comfortable in their lives. Some were more comfortable, some less. But, basically people were getting by.
  • Secondly: Both created massive upheavals in the world. One came as the son of God, and one came as a leader. Both caused a series of changes in people's behavior and belief systems.
  • Thirdly: Neither of them seemed physically intimidating. While Jesus had a very soft and loving "my child" demeanor, Hitler was a shorty with a Charlie Chaplin mustache. Let's face it, sans his popularity, if he met me on the road, I may just slap him for kicks!
  • Forthly: Neither of them had unanimous following, Both of them were loved by some, hated by some and some simply didn't bother to care. Still, their words, thoughts and actions have changed the way the world functions.
  • Lastly: They both truly believed that what they were doing is right, and stood by it no matter what. The legacy of both is still a mystery and that is what upholds their substance till date.

Oooh, one more, both have books to their credit. One is a religious best seller (The Bible) and the other is a philosophical gold mine (Mein Kamph).

So there, they both have a lot in common. So what sets them apart? One's actions were ruled by His patience, love and tolerance. He died to show that he will never bow down to hate. The other's actions were ruled by his lust for power and his hate for a certain clan of people. He always showed that he will never bow down. Period.

While Sorting, Harry Potter was told that he could be great in Slytherin as well as Griffindor. What made the difference was the choice he made.

"We are not defined by what we can do, but by that which we CHOOSE to do!" Going by this golden rule, I choose to be The Messiah!

Think about it, it will be fun!

The Pedestal

Inspiration... the beauty of it is that it can come from the most unexpected places. This post is about a certain thought that has been a recurring visitor to my mind. Something that leads me to get fired up enough to turn female Anna Hazare (sans the hunger and the ugliness).

Men have always put women up on a pedestal. We are the goddesses, the Devis, the lady-lucks, the one force that can bring back a dead husband from the clasps of Yama! While man think that this is an empowering factor, I am forced to see the clear and very clever manipulation behind these.

Don't get it? Let me explain. Women are put on a pedestal, said to be the strength and the personification of perfection. As such there is an underlying pressure on every woman to be perfect. By saying that we are the "bosses", the men slowly take us out of the driving seat and make us unconsciously dependent on them. Once the lady has gotten comfortable depending on those strong shoulders, the expectations start to increase. Women, being emotionally driven, try to deliver. Then, the orders begin. By now, we are just so used to it. That's it, they now have full control. More so, if we ever behave out of the "expected perfection", it is treated like a sin. So, we will practically KILL ourselves just to stick to a man's definition of PERFECTION!

Whoever said that women play mind games? Who said that we manipulate? I have seen men to be more manipulative and cruel. We may try to occasionally influence men through our soft touch and sweet voice. But, our emotional attachment and conscience will seldom let us cause any damage to them, just so that we benefit.

I am not saying men are bad. Oh NO! WE love you'll. We all complete each other, don't we? But please, if you have put us on the pedestal, don't expect us to just stay there forever. Let us be imperfect and let us live the way we WANT to!

PS: If you didn't get it, you're probably a guy! Chicas, if some of you didn't get it, wait it out, you will!

Mentality Retardation

In a time when psychological situations (I choose not to call them problems) can be well understood and defined, I have come to find one particular condition quite common. In spite of the fact that technology is at its peak, nothing is impossible for mankind any more, the concept of Mentality Retardation is becoming glaringly common. It is not a condition a person is born with, it is not caused due to physical damage to the body.

What is Mentality Retardation?
Mentality Retardation can simply be explained as a condition that causes a person to think regressively all the time. They will always compare "what is" to "what was". They do not do this for feeling better about themselves (which could be popular belief). They do this to continue telling themselves that "the time is gone". They choose to believe that "what was" is the only way thing "should" be.

Types Of Mentality Retardation
Mentality Retardation, like any other retardation is three types.

1. Zero Mentality Retardation: This type is for those who choose to be in the time which they physically live in. For example, in the year 2012, their thoughts with regress back only till 2011. Beyond that will be considered as time gone by. They will look back at it as nostalgia, to learn from mistakes and for light conversations. This type is not unhealthy and commonly found.
Treatment
Not needed.

2. Mild Mentality Retardation: This type is for those who choose to regress back to a limited period of time, and for limited reasons. For example, in the year 2012, their thoughts will go back to any time that brings back good memories. These people prefer to live in past glories. Their development will stunt due to this, and depression and frustration can be caused as well.
Treatment
This type is a little unhealthy. But with regular motivation and counselling, it can be cured quite easily.

3. Major Mentality Retardation: This is a very dangerous type. It is quite common as well. In this type, the person chooses to regress back in any time that is opposing the current time in a specific field. For example, in 2012, in the case of pollution, they will regress back to 1987, in the case of corruption, they will regress back to 1947 etc. A person suffering from major mentality retardation doesn't necessarily regress back to their own memories, but to anything they may have read, heard about or seen in movies. They always believe that the other is better than what they have. This type can cause major mood swings, relationship problems, depression and a general inefficiency in endeavors. They will mostly choose to look the other way from happiness.
Treatment
Treating this kind of a mentality retardation can be quite difficult. The person has strong psychological defenses and denials. More so, the slightest argument in favor of the retardation, in any way will regress the treatment further. The only way to treat this condition is to take the person out of their comfort zone, expose them to a world that is either mild mentality retardation driven or zero mentality retardation driven and then have them interact with people in a fairly controlled environment.

While not much research has been done on the subject, the cause for mentality retardation can be assumed to be a serious blow to the person's EQ (emotional quotient). Mild and major mentality retardation could be caused due to a person either having the need to regress in order to feel good (mild mentality retardation), or in order to scratch the itch about having something to complain and feel bad about (major mentality retardation).

Negative Mentality Retardation is also a type. This is the kind that has the person think and look ahead of their time. While most people "suffering" from this condition are seldom valued in their time, the contributions they make to humanity, make a big difference.

While much research has not been done on the subject, (I am fairly certain that I am the first to think about it, or at least the first to put it clearly in words), the research will continue.

Hopefully, we will all get to live in a world of negative and zero mentality retardation. Where people believe in moving ahead, only looking back at good memories momentarily!

Solar-Powered Humans

We humans are the first solar-powered creatures in the world. I can substantiate this fact.

Firstly, every human being can work best in the day time. In fact, those people who wake up early and start daily activities at sun-rise are considered and have been proven to be few of the most efficient and effective people.

Moreso, as the day progresses, our ability to do things peaks by afternoon. Afternoon is the peak time for sunlight as well. Post afternoon, slowly our energy and will to "work" declines. Come evening we feel the need to head back to our home (recharge units).

It is common procedure for most (rational) human beings to sleep at night. Come night time, we feel the day's fatigue and feel the need to sleep (battery low). By the time each person approaches their average bed time, their battery gets completely discharged and they fall asleep.

Another fact that can support my hypothesis is that even though we may work on days when there isn't any clear sunlight (like typical cloudy monsoon days), we are gloomy, dull and sleepy. More technically speaking, our battery doesn't get the required charging. As such, the machine works dizzily!

So there it is. We humans are the world's (and maybe the universe's) first Solar Powered Moving models. All other machines are inspired products!

Hail Science! Good night!
